Did you know?
Burien is named after its lake, and the lake after a settler. Gottlieb Burian, a German immigrant who had run taverns in Seattle, arrived in 1884 and built a cabin at the southeast corner of the lake. Over the years the spelling drifted from Burian to Burien. Becoming a city took much longer: incorporation votes failed in 1954, 1960, 1961, and 1984 before residents approved it in 1992, and Burien incorporated on February 28, 1993.
At Seahurst Park the city did something unusual with its Puget Sound shoreline and took the seawall out. The work came in two phases, and when the park reopened in August 2014 the concrete armoring on the north shore had been replaced with a natural beach for salmon and forage fish.
