Did you know?
Edmonds started with a logger in a rowboat. George Brackett was rowing along the shore of Puget Sound in search of timber in 1870 when he first saw the site, and in 1876 he bought 140 acres there. He opened the first store in 1880, built the first waterfront sawmill in 1889, and led the effort to incorporate Edmonds in 1890, becoming its first mayor. The name may honor Vermont senator George Franklin Edmunds, or Point Edmund, the name the Wilkes expedition first gave to Point Edwards.
For decades a string of shingle mills along the waterfront, turning out mostly cedar shakes, was the town's economic backbone. The last mill closed on June 1, 1951. By then the Edmonds Port District, created in 1948, was building a marina and the state's first public saltwater fishing pier. In 1924 Edmonds elected Alice U. Kerr mayor, one of the first women mayors in Washington State.
