1851. On November 13, a group of 10 adults and 12 children disembarked from the schooner Exact at Alki Point, in today's West Seattle. It was a rainy morning, and after a miserable winter most of the settlers moved the following spring to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay, where they found a better harbor and a more sheltered townsite, at the site of present-day Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle.
1889. At about 2:30 p.m. on June 6, a pot of glue burst into flames in a basement cabinet shop at the corner of Front (1st Avenue) and Madison streets. By sunset, some 64 acres of the city lay in smoldering ruins. Seattle rebuilt with brick and stone, and the result survives today as Pioneer Square.
1962. On April 21, the gates opened at the Seattle World's Fair. Seattleites had watched the Space Needle grow, and a ride to the top was a must for visitors.
