Did you know?
Auburn was first called Slaughter. Dr. Levi Ballard set up a medical practice there in 1866, and about 1886 he and his wife filed the first plat under the name Slaughter, in honor of Lt. William Slaughter, an army officer killed in 1855. The town incorporated in 1891, but many residents found the name uncomfortable, and in 1893 it was renamed Auburn, taken from the opening of Oliver Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village: "Sweet Auburn! Loveliest village of the plain."
Hops once made the valley prosperous, until an aphid infestation destroyed nearly all of the crop in 1890 and farms shifted mostly to dairy and berries. The Seattle-Tacoma Interurban line, running by 1902, let farmers get produce to market within hours. After the Howard Hanson Dam on the Green River was completed in 1962, with Mud Mountain Dam on the White River, the valley was nearly flood-free, and in 1963 Boeing built a facility there to mill sheet metal skin for jet airliners.
