Federal Way takes its name from the school district. In 1929 five school districts were consolidated into Federal Way School District 210, the first official use of the name, and the Chamber of Commerce adopted it in the early 1950s. A small group once campaigned unsuccessfully to change the name to Twelve Lakes, for the dozen small lakes in the area.
Residents voted against incorporating in 1971, 1981 and 1985. A fourth vote, on March 14, 1989, passed, and the City of Federal Way was incorporated on February 28, 1990.
