Everett began as a townsite of stumps. The Everett Land Company was incorporated in November 1890, and by spring 1891 crews were clearing the land and platting the town, named for Everett Colby, the son of company backer Charles L. Colby. Tacoma lumberman Henry Hewitt Jr. arrived in 1890 dreaming of a great industrial city and became the company's first president. Everett incorporated by election in April 1893.
Everett earned the nickname City of Smokestacks. A 1903 city directory listed 10 sawmills and 12 shingle mills, and by 1912 the city had 95 manufacturing plants, including Frederick Weyerhaeuser's lumber mill, described as the world's largest, which had reached 70 million feet of lumber by 1912. Construction of Naval Station Everett began in November 1987, and Navy personnel moved into the finished buildings in January 1994.
